Which app should you clone first with AI?

The easiest clone project has a short journey you can finish and verify. A personal task manager or small puzzle usually offers a clearer first milestone than a public social network or rental marketplace. Choose by what the app must do, not by how simple its homepage looks.

A practical starting point

For a browser project, start with Todoist, Trello, Google Keep, Snake or 2048. For native mobile practice, consider Forest. Add shared users, media processing or live payments only when you can test the backend and operational work they introduce.

Use a small decision table

These are editorial starting points, not measured build-time promises. Your existing skills, agent, codebase and quality requirements change the effort. Prefer a tool whose essential outcome is easy to describe in one sentence.

A good first sentence is “I can create a task, complete it, undo and reopen it.” A weak first specification is “Everything in a famous platform, but cheaper.” Narrow the outcome before asking an agent to generate the interface.

ProjectFirst complete journeyWhat makes it harder
Todoist-style tasksAdd, schedule, complete, undo, reloadRecurring dates and shared projects
Trello-style boardCreate and move a card, then reopenConcurrent team edits and permissions
Google Keep-style notesWrite, label, find and restore a noteRich media and cross-device sync
2048 or SnakePlay, win/lose and restart predictablyAnimation/input ordering and save rules
Forest-style timerStart, interrupt and recover a sessionNative lifecycle and notifications

Count the systems behind a feature

A local task list needs a data model and persistence. A public form also needs a server endpoint and private response storage. Scheduling adds timezones and conflicts. Messaging adds membership, delivery and reconnect behavior. Media publishing adds file handling and processing.

Use that progression to choose a next project. Typeform is a useful step toward public submissions; Calendly is a step toward shared scheduling. Neither is just a different arrangement of cards. Write down the additional system and a failure you will test before adding it to the scope.

Make local storage an explicit choice

A browser-only MVP can use local persistence and export without an account system. That keeps the first journey small, but it ties data to the browser and origin. Browser-managed storage has limits and can be removed; it is not automatic cross-device backup.

IndexedDB supports structured records and larger data than a simple string preference store. Choose storage by the actual records and assets, then include a portable export. Test reload, invalid imports and unavailable storage before keeping important personal data in a generated app.

Give the agent a finish line

Copy the complete brief, remove optional features and ask for one working vertical slice first. Verify the real result before expanding. A single tested flow produces useful feedback for the next iteration.

Keep the source in version control and download your customized Markdown brief. Record what passed, what failed and what remains outside the version. The starter/intermediate/advanced labels describe relative scope; they are not a guarantee of effort, safety or production readiness.

Instructions to add after the complete brief

Deliver one complete journey first. Persist its state, handle an empty state and a real failure, and demonstrate it after reload. Keep a small explicit exclusion list. Show the actual export or gameplay result before adding optional features.

Turn the plan into a complete brief.

Copy a tool’s full prompt, customize its sections, and keep the verification requirements with your project.
